Why is my older cat peeing at doors, but still using her litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

7 yr old cat has been urinating at the front and back doors for the past 2 months, she still uses her litter box for defecation. New kitten joined the home 7 months ago, also a member of the family has been suffering declining health and passed away this week. Not sure how to correct this behavior. Thank you.

It's more common for housesoiling in cats to be caused by a medical issue vs. a primary behavior problem, especially in an older cat with no previous history of litter box issues. So if Little hasn't been to the vet for this issue yet, this would definitely be my first suggestion! She may have FIC (feline idiopathic cystitis), bladder stones, a bacterial UTI, or a systemic illness like diabetes or hyperthyroidism causing this problem. Your veterinarian can advise you on treatment depending on what is found. If her urinalysis and blood work are normal, then we would be more comfortable approaching this as a behavior problem. In that case, I would really recommend getting in touch with a professional who can help you in person, since these types of cases tend to be complex, and recommendations will depend on the specifics of the situation. You can search for a board-certified veterinary behaviorist to work with in your area here: www.dacvb.org
