What is this white fluid discharge from my female hedgehog? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 10 days old

I picked my hedgehog up tonight to hold her for awhile and placed her in the sink for a quick foot bath. She peed and pooped in the sink and it was totally normal. Then a few moments after I took her out, I noticed her tail stick out like she was going to go again, so I stuck my hand out. It was a thin, white, opaque fluid. It was about 1/4 tsp. It had absolutely no smell. I read this is sometimes common for female hedgies aged 4-5 months. Do you think she’s okay?

Thanks for reaching out about Butterpat. It could be the passage of an uterine plug (in young animals only), but also concerns for thick urine due to too much calcium in the diet. Do you feed green vegetables or lots of calcium powder on insects? This could be a precursor to a urinary problems. If persists, see an an appointment with a veterinarian. Good luck.
