My rescued dog is skinny and won't gain weight. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old

So my dog was a stray and we rescued him but he was at the dog shelter for a few days. He was at a healthy weight before he was there and when we got him out he was skinny. You could see his bones and he was only there for a couple days. Since we’ve had him he’s been eating everyday and been going on walks but he doesn’t gain any muscle or weight in general. What should I do?

You should treat him for intestinal worms to start with as this condition can prevent him from gaining any weight, if this doesn't help try feeding him 3 times a day with a high quality food such as Acana for example.
