Can my family bring their dog if my old cat hates other animals?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 13 years and 1 month old | 21 lbs

My family will be staying at our house for a four day visit. They intend to bring their small dog. Our 13 year old Maine coon hates other animals. He hisses and gets very upset if they are introduced. We’ve only had one friend bring her dog over, it was brief, and we kept the dog outside. I’m leaning towards telling them they need to stay in a hotel if they want to bring the dog, but I’d like to be generous if there’s a chance it could work. Any thoughts on what to do for our cat?

If George gets really upset with other animals in the house, I think it would be best for your family to stay in a hotel if they are bringing their dog. He's an older cat, he deserves to be comfortable in his home, and stress can bring out health problems in cats such as feline idiopathic cystitis. I think his needs come first here. Best of luck.
