My dog's third eyelid is swollen and painful. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

My dogs third eyelid was covering part of her eyeball on her right eye all day yesterday. It didn't seem to be hurting and she was acting normal. Now this morning it is covering more of her eyeball, appears swollen, and seems to be causing some pain. What could be causing this? Is there something I can do at home to help?

Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. A buster collar would be extremely helpful to avoid any scratching or rubbing (if any).
