Is spaying a French Bulldog dangerous due to their breathing problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 33 lbs

Hi, my French Bulldog is about 4-5 years old I don't know exactly because she's a rescue. Before I had her she's had an operationg because she ate a clother. She's healthy. This year she didn't get her period our vet said we need to spay her but does'nt operate this breed. It's my 1st time owning a frenchie, is it really dangerous to spay them because of how they breather? Can they die under the operation?

French bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning that their muzzle is shorter than a normal dog. This does pose some anesthetic risk but for the most part, these pets do fine under anesthesia with appropriate precautions. I do agree with your veterinarian that having her spayed is a good idea. I recommend to look for veterinarian who has experience and is comfortable with sedating brachycephalic dogs. If you notice that she is a noisy breather, you may talk to the veterinarian in advance about repairing any stenotic nares or elongated soft palate during the procedure. These conditions are very common in French bulldogs. If she’s already going to be sedated for a spay, then that would be a good time to repair these other abnormalities if the doctor thinks it’s necessary. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!
