Will kennel cough be serious for my senior dog with a trachea issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old | 15 lbs

Scottie is 11 and had a hole in his trachea after an attack from a few years ago, one of his puppy friends has kennel cough and I am worried about what will happen if he catches it. With his age and previous health condition, will kennel cough be more serious for him?

Hello. Possibly, especially if the trachea has scarred in decreasing the diameter or weakening the trachea in the area of the wound. I would recommend keeping Scottie vaccinated with the kennel cough vaccine. It may not totally prevent him from getting the virus, but the effects may be less severe. For now, I would not let Scottie play with his friend until his friend is no longer coughing. Kennel cough can take up to 3 weeks to run its course.
