Can my 5-year-old dog be spayed safely? Is she too old for surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 15 lbs

My niece's dog is a Shih Tzu mix, she's around 10 to 15 pounds, she's 5 years and 7 months old. My question is can she be spayed at that age? Cause my niece is taking her to be spayed in a few days. She doesn't seem to have any health problems. My niece does not take her to the vet normally unless she's showing a health problem.

Yes, pets can be safely spayed at this age. As long as her heart and internal organs are functioning normally, complications are not expected (but just like anything, there is always a small risk with any procedure). Minnie is still in her prime and will not be considered a senior until 9 years of age. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
