My cat won't put weight on his back leg. Is it a hip dislocation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old

My cat has not been putting weight on his right back leg for maybe 10 days now. Its not broken but it is sunken in center of his leg somewhere (maybe from holding it up not sure) and i can feel two rounded bones up there closer to spine, im worried its a dislocation.. I mean hes an outdoor cat but i keep him sometimes in house when he wants to (past 10 days), he mostly slept and stayed still.. I cant bring him to vet, and im not very positive it can heal on its own. What could it be? Thanks...

Hello. It actually does sound like a dislocated hip. If it were an abscess or infection, it should have either healed or ruptured by now. If this is a dislocated hip, it is not life-threatening, but it will never heal to be a normal hip, either. There are options to seek veterinary help. CareCredit & Scratchpay are same as cash payment options allowing you to pay out a medical bill without incurring fees. You can see if your town or county has any kind of low cost veterinary care ( call the closest Humane Society ), sometimes churches & other civic groups will help with veterinary care, and try starting a GoFundMe page. If all this is unavailable to you, keeping Zuco indoors will be important. At some point, the joint will probably freeze, but it will never be a normal mobile joint & it will always be painful. He will probably always limp on it. Finally, you could relinquish him to a no-kill shelter where he will get the proper care he needs & hopefully find another forever home. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
