My cat is in pain. What over-the-counter meds are safe for cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male

Are there any pain meds I can buy at the store that I can give to my cat? His prescription ran out (morphine) and his vet won't be back until saturday. He's in so much pain that he can hardly move. Please help!!

Unfortunately no. Many OTC pain medications are toxic to cats, and are fatal if given. If Oliver is in a lot of pain, he needs to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

I'm so sorry Whiskers is in pain, but there unfortunately are no over the counter pain medications that are safe for cats. Depending on what is causing the pain there might be some comfort measures like warm compresses or gentle massage that you could try. If this is a chronic problem you might want to ask the vet about having extra pain medication for the future once you are able to make an appointment.
