My dog's eye is red, tearing, and shut. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

My dog has the beginning of cataracts and my concern is that today she woke up with a hurt eye unable to open very much tears coming out and her eye was bloodshot looking, she has brown eyes so it was a little hard to see but it seemed all dark red. I’m seeking any advice or thoughts as to what may be going on. I really appreciate your assistance! Thank you.

I would recommend bringing Sugar to the veterinarian. It may have nothing to do with her cataracts but she may have a scratch on her eye. I would recommend putting an ecollar on Sugar and bringing her to the veterinarian tomorrow morning. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
