Why is my fostered dog with heartworms dry-heaving frequently?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 lbs

A stray dog we have been fostering for about two weeks just recently began dry-heaving frequently about two days ago. It is small, male, not neutered, of a mixed-breed and has heart worms which we are treating currently.

These signs are compatible with the heartworm infection which can cause dyspnoea and respiratory signs. I would strongly advice to contact your local veterinarian as these signs might be compatible with respiratory/cardiovascular complications during heartworm treatment.
