Why is my dog's tail suddenly down and painful to the touch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 53 lbs

This morning my female German Shepherd mix was fine and I get home from work tonight she comes out of the kennel with her tail straight down. Later I tell my husband and he touch’s her tail and she cries. While my husband distracts her, I feel down her tail a couple of times to see if she winces in pain again. It was hard to tell. Her gential area looks fine. I’m worried. What could have happened?

Gabby could have a tail sprain, also known as swimmers tail or limber tail. The muscles at the base of the tail swell and cause significant pain. A skin infection, wound or tail fracture could cause similar symptoms. I’d recommend seeing your vet for an exam to determine what’s going on. They can also prescribe pain medication.
