Dog stomach bloats. Is gastropexy safe for older dogs? What are risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Female | spayed | 7 years and 7 months old | 55 lbs

I have a 7 yr old German Shorthair Pointer. Her stomach has bloated up twice this month, and then goes down after a couple minutes, it looks like gastric torsion..but without the twisting. She just stands there awkwardly. I'm considering getting a gastropexy done as her breed is prone to "twisted stomach"..what are the risks? Is she too old for surgery? I have taken a lot of precautions, but despite that, she bloated a 2nd time. Could it b anything else? She's generally healthy/active.

Seven isn't too old for surgery, there are dogs who have successful surgery that are even older than Penny. You can have a gastopexy done on her. There are the typically risks of surgery such as infection, excessive bleeding, and in rare cases, death. Your vet can explain the risks to you. Before doing surgery, I strongly recommend having blood work and a urinalysis done to make sure that everything is functioning normally. I hope this helps!
