Why is my cat walking crouched with a low back end and swaying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Devon Rex | Female | unspayed

Hi, my cat started to walk funny - with her back end low on the ground, crouched in, and swaying to the left. She continues to be very active, runs and jumps, and no change in eating habits. I’ve taken her to the local vet, but they don’t know what’s wrong, they suspect a back injury? Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks

Hi. It would be helpful to know how old she is, what your veterinarian has already done. I would be concerned about either a back issue such as a disc, neuropathy possibly caused by diabetes, or someother type of neurologic issue affecting the back legs. I would recommend you ask your veterinarian for a referral to a neurologist. They would be able to imaging of the area to look more closely. I would also recommend a full blood panel to check internal functions and for diabetes. Good luck
