Why is my puppy eating his poop? Is it harmful, and how to stop it?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie Boy. This is a common habit in puppies. Many dogs will outgrow the behavior as they age. In the meantime, scoop the yard as frequently as possible. You can also try applying Forbid powder to his food. This can help to break the habit. Eating his feces can place him at a higher risk for reinfection himself with parasites. I hope this information helps!

    Charlie is adorable! You need to stop him from eating stones, as those could cause a foreign body obstruction. Distract him when you see he's trying to eat stones by getting him to do tricks or offering him a treat. I assume you mean he's also eating waste, such as feces. This isn't good for him to do as well, and when he poops, pick it up right after he goes to keep him from eating it. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Daisy. You have a couple of options to try to control this behavior in your puppies. Hopefully they will outgrow it, but not all will. You can try placing Forbid powder on both of their food. Another option is meat tenderizer on their food. Finally, scooping the poop in the yard as frequently as possible to try to limit their access to it. I hope this information helps!

My puppy of 10 weeks keeps eating his own poo. I'm trying to train him not to but he is ignoring the commands completely. Might it be medically connected? Is it normal and how can I teach him to stop. He is also dewormed last week.Please help
The next best step here is to make his poop taste bad. You can do this by purchasing a product called Forbid, which can be bought at your local pet store or online and give him that as instructed on the box for up to 2 weeks. You can also try 1 tsp of meat tenderizer added to his food daily. Most pets will grow out of this habit, but it is best to pick up the poop immediately after he defecates, and only leash walk him outside so that he does not have free range to eat feces. Unfortunately, poop-eating is a fairly common behavior among dogs. The best way to resolve it is to pick up the feces immediately after the dogs do their business. There is a product called Forbid, which is sprinkled on the dogs' food, that makes the poop taste bad, but as soon as you stop using it the problem will very likely come back. Do not scold Prince unless you actually see him doing it. He will not know why he is being reprimanded.

Hello,my 5 month shit zu puppy keeps eating her feces ,she has done it before too,but it seems like it is getting worse and worse,i mean it is becoming more frequent.i seriously have no idea how to stop her from doing that?!
Puppies will eat their own stool out of boredom, curiosity or in an attempt to correct a nutritional deficiency. You can use a product called FOR-BID that may prevent this behavior. It is a powder that is sprinkled on food. You can usually get it from your veterinarian. Leash walk her and pick up stool immediately. Restrict her access to areas where there is stool. Puppies will usually outgrow this behavior.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It is quite common for puppies to eat their own poop! While disgusting, it is not toxic. I would try to discourage him from eating it, by cleaning it up right away. You can also try out a product called For-Bid, which is a powder you mix with his food, which is supposed to make his poop taste bad when it comes out the other end. It doesn't always work, but it is worth a shot. Petco should sell this or some variant of it. The time that eating feces can get problematic is when the puppy has intestinal worms. This can make treatment of the worms difficult, as the dogs "autoinfect" themselves when they eat their own poop. I would advise getting a stool sample checked for parasites, if you haven't done so yet, and also deworm him at monthly intervals as recommended by your vet. And of course, make sure you are feeding him a well-balanced, nutritional complete diet appropriate for young growing pups. I hope this helps, and that Milo is otherwise happ

I am trying to go the natural route with muffin. She eats her poop. I have tried putting pumpkin in her foid, pineapple and now using zucchini. I try to catch her poop, but when I seat after her, she breaks apart and runs with a piece. Anything else

There are a number of supplements that can be added to the food to help make the stool taste bad, which can help discourage the behavior. I've Started Feeding Him More, He Don't Have Worms Either. How do you stop your pup from eating his own poop? Is it normal?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! While it is not normal, it is not uncommon especially in your dogs. This is often times not an indication to feed them more. Usually they grow out of this behavior. This is usually just a naughty habit and does not indicated any underlying nutritional problem or concern. The best thing you can do, if she is eating her own poop, it to clean up her feces after every time she goes. It may also be helpful to use a product like Forbid that you sprinkle on her food which helps discourage eating the feces. My dog ate his poop he is 10 weeks old ... what donI do
It's a gross habit, but many dogs do this and are fine. There could be a couple of reasons why Parce ate his poop. One is a nutritional deficiency in his diet. Make sure you are feeding him a high quality puppy formulated food. Another cause is intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. I would make sure he is up to date on his deworming treatments, giving him one if he is not. Finally, it could be he simply likes the taste.
