My rescue dog is aggressive with other dogs. How to train her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akbash Dog | Female | spayed | 4 years and 1 month old | 115 lbs

My dog shows aggression with other dogs. She is a rescue, when I first brought her home she was fine but the aggression has developed over time. I cant take her anywhere that we might bump into another dog unless I have a harness, and a soft mesh muzzle so that she doesnt hurt another dog. Most times she doesnt even give warning. Is there anything I can do to correct this? I would really love to be able to take her hiking without fear of a another dog being hurt.

This behavior can be hard to correct especially since she is an adult. I would talk to your vet about getting her started on an anti-anxiety medicine like fluoxetine or trazadone. These will help to calm her nerves, but you will also need to start a training program. This would be best started with an behaviorist or dog trainer. This will be a long road and unfortunately, there is no easy fix. I hope this helps and she starts to improve.
