My dog's nose is dry and cracking. What could be causing it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 3 months old | 55 lbs

I am trying to find out what is wrong with her nose. It is super dry and cracking. She isn't acting weird, she is eating, stool is normal, doesn't seem to bother her aside from some licking. It sometimes gets a bit better but then goes bad again I think it's due to her licking it but not sure what it is. She is 55 lbs and 8 years old

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ariel. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She may need to have biopsies taken from the affected skin on her nose. I am concerned that she has developed an autoimmune skin disease where the body attacks it's own skin cells. In this case, an accurate diagnosis is necessary to prescribe medications to manage the disease. I recommend having her seems soon as the cracking skin on the nose can result in terrible bleeding if it gets deep enough. I hope this information helps!
