My cat's meow is hoarse and he's gagging. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

5 days ago my cat’s meow started to sound hoarse. He threw up his food once 5 days ago and hasn’t since. He was also making gagging sounds once in a while and swallowing hard. He was meowing a lot before this happened, but he is a very vocal cat and has never become hoarse so I don’t know if this is the cause. He is eating and drinking and his meow is starting to sound a lot less raspy, like it might be getting better. What could be wrong? Does he need to see a vet?

Sometimes a raspy voice in a cat could be due to a respiratory infection. It’s sounds like Barney is getting better, so I would hold off on a vet for now. If the raspiness gets worse or he develops other signs such as lethargy, anorexia, coughing, or sneezing, then I would take him into the vet. I hope this helps!
