My anxious kitten won't use her new hooded litter box. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 3 days old

My kitten is the anxious type in general. Today I decided to buy a litter box with a hood and door because she makes a mess in her other grey litter box despite having a large mat to capture the excess litter. I tried removing the lid for her so she can get used to it. What could I do to help her use her new litter box?

Be patient with Artemis. If she is anxious it may take her a while to get used to the new box. You can try putting a pheromone diffuser in the room as this may help to calm her down. Another option for a litter box if she does not like one with a cover is to get a Rubbermaid container and cut a hole in it low enough that she can walk through. This will be tall enough that she cannot urinate over the top. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!
