My dog is limping after playing hard. How can I help his paw pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 20 days old | 81 lbs

My dog Finn started limping last night. He had been playing hard all day, then we went to the dog park and he had a blast playing fetch for an hour. I noticed him limping after but saw no injury. Today he is limping hard doesn’t want to put pressure in it and won’t even stand on it. I checked his paw / paw pad and saw nothing. What can I do to help him not be in pain? He is still wanting to play just you can tell it’s really bothering him. I don’t want to jump to conclusions so I’m asking help.

Poor Finn! He might have strained a ligament with vigorous play. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps.
