My puppy fell and hit her head. Can I just monitor her at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

I was holding my puppy today and she wiggled out of my arms falling about 3-4 feet to the hardwood floor. Landed on her back possibly hit her head. She yelped when she fell then got up and staggered backward with her eyes closed. For about 15-20 seconds she seemed lethargic and kept closing her eyes had to be stimulated to wake fully but immediately after was playing, running around totally fine. No wobbling/limping, pupils are equal and reactive, gums pink. Am I ok to just monitor her?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Wendy may have just been shaken from the fall. I recommend monitoring her for lethargy, reduced appetite or evidence of pain (yelping when jumping or running, being pet in certain areas, or overall reduced activity). If any of these signs occur, she should be evaluated by a vet as soon as possible. I hope all is well!

What a scary experience. Puppies are quite durable, so she may be perfectly fine with a fall from that height. I'd recommend getting her up to see if she'd play and eat normally and just monitor her for changes over the next couple of hours. If you're at all concerned, it would best to get her to a vet for monitoring.
