My dog is dry heaving and coughing, but nothing comes out. Is he okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 105 lbs

My dog has started, what I would call, a "dry heaving cough/vomit". It started about 24 hours ago, and are not sure what the cause is. I know it didn't help anything when we left the house for 5 minutes and he ate part of a plastic bag with food in it. He keeps trying to cough, or vomit up something, but nothing comes out but a little saliva and some thick fluid, but nothing of actual substance. When he coughs, nothing is getting out! What should I do, or will it pass?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sampson. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. There is the potential that he is choking on a portion of the plastic bag. He could also be experiencing an upper respiratory tract infection that is characterized by a hacking gagging cough. Some dogs will hack up a white foamy material. His veterinarian should be able to differentiate between these scenarios given his exam findings. I hope this information helps!
