My dog has kidney disease and won't eat. Is homemade food okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog was diagnosed with kidney disease. We tried many kind of low phosphorus diets and she snubbed everything. But she's hungry! I've been feeding her 90/10 lean ground beef and rice. Her appetite is less than normal but she's eating. I'm making sure she takes her phosphorus binder and Omega. Is she better off not eating? Lost. Don't want to euthanize her.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry about your little girl. Any food is better than no food, so if you can get any food into her, keep going. Low protein diets are best, so see if you can increase the rice portion, and also try to get some fibre (pumpkin/squash) into her. You can talk to your vet about prescription diets, as these are often designed to be yummy, so trial that out. Best of luck with your little girl, I hope she feels better soon!
