My dog has dry, itchy skin. Home remedies aren't helping. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 60 lbs

What can I do to help my dog with his dry and itchy skin? I give him a teaspoon of coconut oil, a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and half a teaspoon of honey in his morning food.

You can try a fish oil supplement, such as EicosaCaps or DermCaps. They may be more effective than coconut or EVOO. Use a humidifier in your home if you live in an arid climate. Lastly, have Damien physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical causes. Certain endocrine disorders can lead to skin issues as can infection (bacterial, fungal or parasites).
