My dog threw up wine-colored liquid. Is it blood? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

My dog started getting sick last night after dinner. He vomited a few times, but otherwise seemed ok. We woke up this morning to a huge wine-colored splattered mess. I am not even sure if it was vomit or diarrhea. It seemed very liquid, with very small bits of solid matter. There were several other spots of just clear viscous liquid (he has vomited like this before). Again, he seems otherwise fine, but this wine colored stain has me worried. Only photo i have is of splatter on wall

Poor Sampson! The color could be from something he ate or it could be blood. Keep an eye on him, and I can give you a home remedy to try. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
