My dog had low-grade mast cell tumors removed. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Male | neutered | 100 lbs

Had 2 lumps under neck for 5 years. Told if they don’t change to not worry. Recently got neutered and were removed although the lumps hadn’t changed. Came back as mast cell tumors. Told they can’t be sure they got it all since they were deep but are low grade and we do nothing from here. Is this the best course of action or what should be the next steps?

Hello, thank you for your question about Zeus. If the lumps/masses were removed with relatively good margins, meaning that your veterinarian was fairly confident they removed all portions of the tumor, and the mast cell tumor was low grade no additional treatment is required other than close monitoring for recurrence in these areas. Although not as common with low grade mast cell tumors, you could elect to look for any evidence of metastasis, or travel of the tumors. This would likely include chest x-rays and an abdominal ultrasound. However, I believe it is also appropriate to continue monitoring Zeus. Hope this helps, good luck!
