Is it normal for my new rescue dog to sleep 20 hours and not play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 32 lbs

Rudy often sleeps 20 hours per day. It is not a sound sleep, as he often lays quietly with his eyes open. He is a rescue dog and we've had him for 8 weeks. He seems comfortable with us and is energetic when he is awake. His poops are a little soft, so we have been adding pure pumpkin - it has helped somewhat, but not completely. Not sure if it is okay that he sleeps so much. Is he just bored? He does not "play" with toys and does not engage with us other than for some training and petting.

Hello. While this is a bit unusual for a relatively young, usually high energy beagle, but perhaps Rudy is just a calm dog. Not all dogs play with toys, especially if this was never a part of his life before you adopted him. He can learn to play & this may happen as he becomes more familiar with you. 2 months is still too soon for Rudy to perhaps feel totally secure in his new environment. As long as he seems relatively healthy, is eager to engage for meal times & walks, he just may be a low key dog. You can talk with your vet about this & see if any additional testing like for low thyroid ( very unlikely at this age ) is warranted. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
