How long after switching a new food should I expect stool improvement? My puppy has had diarrhea for 2 weeks, we went to the vet, neg fecal test, she was dewormed and given metronidazole last week. After the meds we still saw no improvements. I was feeding her victor which i read could cause diarrhea due to high protein (38%) so yesterday I switched her to 4health lamb puppy food. Even before the switch of foods she had liquid stool and it has not stopped yet. I gave her a dogAntidiareah liquid

Hello. It might take 3-5 days minimum to see if the diet will work. Often, when we suspect a problem is due to a food sensitivity, the food trial is 6-8 weeks. So, it can take time to see if the diarrhea subsides. Just make sure she is drinking plenty of water & not losing weight. Also, make sure you communicate to your vet that the diarrhea did not respond to the metronidazole. She may want to continue testing, switch to another antibiotic or medication. I would also start her on a good probiotic for dogs like Proviable or FortiFlora, both should be available at most pet retailers. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

It could be from something Molly ate, it looks like a bit of diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Poor girl. I would try switching her to a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice for a few days to see if the diarrhea clears up. You can also order a probiotic and add it to her food to help settle her tummy. Medications are not indicated for only 24 hours of diarrhea, but if it progresses or she starts having frank bloody diarrhea, she needs to be seen by a vet right away.

HI, thanks for using Petcoahc! Poor Moxie! There are many causes of diarrhea, a food change is just one possible cause. Others are: virus, ate something gross outside, intestinal parasites, toxin, etc. You can try feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed about 2 cups per day until 1-2 normal stools. You can also try a probiotic like Purina fortiflora. I wouldn't wait too much longer before bringing her to your Vet. They can prescribe medications to help. Good luck!
