Why is my dog restless with watery diarrhea and breathing fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 21 lbs

He was acting very strange earlier. He was restless and wouldn't go to sleep when time for bed. He started having diarrhea, so I decided to take a long walk with him. It lasted well over an hour and while out he stopped often to try and dedicate, but most of it was water. There was a bit of liquid stool that came out later. After the walk he finally lay down to rest and he is breathing very rapidly. It's almost up to a breathe a second.

Hello. Shiro may just be having some digestive upsets that are still messing with him. Are his gums nice & pink? If so, & there is no vomiting, then you can probably let him rest this evening. Starting tomorrow, if he feels like eating, start him on a bland diet of 25% white chicken breast & 75% plain white rice or low fat cottage cheese. Small amounts fairly often should be offered throughout the day tomorrow. If he is feeling better & his stool seems to be subsiding, you can slowly transition back to his regular food Sunday or Monday. But if he continues to act distressed by refusing to eat, continued diarrhea, retching or vomiting, you will need to see your vet as soon as convenient. I hope Shiro is feeling better soon & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
