My dog has megaesophagus. Does she need a special chair for infrequent regurgitation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

How often do does regurgitate with megaesophagus? Dog doesn’t do it often and it’s not much food involved but she had regurgitated off and on for most of her life. She also suffers from acid reflux but that’s under control now with RX diet. Does she need a special chair? I seen that online or is iok since she doesn’t do it very often sometimes weeks or month can go by before it happens again. She coughs after drinking water too she always has tho ....thank you for your time

It really depends on lots of circumstances. How severe is the megaesophagus (ME), the type of food, how well they tolerate the food, how much (volume) and how often do they eat, the cause of the ME, etc. Bailey Chairs will help some patients with ME, but not every dog will benefit from its use. It would be best to discuss this with your vet, though, since they will have a better idea as to the cause and severity of Kiwi's ME. But if she is not regurgitating frequently (daily or weekly), it seems like what you are doing is working pretty well!
