My dog has red bumps on his lips and mouth. How can I help him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 12 days old | 105 lbs

My dog has red bumps on his lips and mouth. He’s had them for some time now, but they seem to be getting worse and he’s showing signs that they are irritating him, such as scratching at them. I’ve asked our vet about them and they recommended switching to metal food bowls, which we did, but it does not seem to be getting any better. I was wondering if there was anything we could try to help with the bumps and irritation?

Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!
