My dog has a red itchy bump under her eye. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 1 month old | 50 lbs

My 9 year old lab mix has a red bump under her right eye. It seems to itch or irritate her a little. She tries to scratch it with her paw or rub her eye area on something (blanket, carpet, couch). Is this maybe just a scratch? Or something more that requires vet attention? She’s had it for about a week.

It definitely looks irritated and like there could be a possible cyst or growth there. I would have it examined by a vet in person so that it can be looked at more closely and treated as needed, especially since it's by the eye, bothersome, and been there a while. In addition, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Midnight is a good idea as this will stop her from being able to paw at it and may reduce the irritation to it some.
