Why does my dog yelp when I touch his tail? Medical or behavioral?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered

Hello! My name is Madison and my Beagle Harvey has just now been reacting negatively with me pushing up his tail, usually he holds it straight in the air, but later today he started yelping when I push it up, nothing seems wrong with his butt and he doesn't mind when I squish it, I was wondering if this was a behavior thing or a medical thing (usually he doesn't do this)? Thank you!

Harvey may have injured his tail or he may be having an issue with his anal glands that are located right inside the rectum. If this behavior continues for more than 24 hours I would recommend taking him in to your vet to be checked out. Best of luck. I hope this helps.
