Cat ear infection: Can I clean at home or should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 15 lbs

My cat has developed an ear infection of some sort? I don’t know what caused it, but she’s shaking her head it’s got black stuff inside and it’s grown red from irritation and there’s a discharge coming out of her ear. Do you think it’s safe to try to clean out her ear at home to lessen her discomfort or should I take her to the vet ASAP?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Piper isn’t feeling well. If you have a pet ear cleaner you can use it once until you can get her to a vet. Ear infections are not an emergency per se, but do need to be addressed when your vet is open. If you don’t have a pet ear cleaner, I would leave it alone until you see your vet. Good luck and kisses to Piper!
