How soon can my male dog breed after anesthesia? Will it affect sperm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 11.7 lbs

How soon after anesthesia can a dog be bred? We have a male miniature poodle that stands at stud and we have a female booked for the next day. I can cancel, if it will affect him or the sperm.

The anesthesia will likely not affect his sperm or the resulting pups but could possibly affect his libido as most animals are slightly lethargic for 1-2 days after anesthesia. If it was general anesthesia for an invasive procedure such as a dental with extractions or even a mass removal, I would recommend waiting longer although the female may only be breedable from day 12-18 after bleeding (this is not exact). Good luck!
