Why did my senior dog have a seizure, lose balance, and vomit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | unneutered

Hi, my 11 year old boxer dog had a funny turn last night. He lost balance and became suddenly unable to stand. He seemed to be having some sort of fit and once this passed, he was unable to stand for a while, and for the rest of the evening was unable to climb stairs. During this time he rested and drank plenty of water. A short while after this incident, he vomited twice. He has since slept overnight and now is walking, eating and going to the loo as normal. Are you able to suggest what it was?

Tyler may have had a seizure. I do recommend bringing him into your vet’s for screening bloodwork to rule out severe liver/kidney issues that may cause seizures. If the episode happens again, keep him away from stairs and away from objects that he may hurt himself on during the seizure and stay away from his mouth to avoid being accidentally bitten. Vets generally do not start dogs on seizure medications unless they have had 2 or more seizures in a month or have a seizure lasting more than a few minutes. You can also inquire with your vet about a diet called Purina Neurocare that has helped many dogs with seizures/epilepsy. Good luck!
