My dog was bitten, face swelling spreading. Is his airway at risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 45 lbs

My dog jumped into my neighbors yard the other night and was bit by one of their dogs. Yesterday I noticed his face swelling, what I believe to be an abscess. I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow, but it appears that the swelling is moving into his neck. Should I be concerned about this blocking his airway? Thank you.

Hi, it is difficult for us to judge wether the swelling can impair Max airways without seeing him.. also a bit risky ! My concern is that it seems like a few days have passed already and Max has not been treated with any medications, the infection seems to be obviously spreading... so I think you should get him seen sooner ! I just think about when I had an abscess... it is sooo painful ! Hope you can arrange an earlier appointment.! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Max gets better soon.
