My puppy has flaky, peeling skin from fleas. How do I treat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I found a puppy and he had a lot of bugs (mostly fleas) on him. I bathed him and got the visible bugs off. His skin appears to be badly damaged from the bug bites and he may have mange. I bought some pet mange spray (attached) and I spray it on him two times a day. He has skin patches that appear to be pealing off and is very flaky all over. I’d like to know how to get his skin back healthy. I’d also like to know how often I should bathe him and if I should bathe and remove the flaky skin.

Poor puppy! You need to see the veterinarian. Over the counter products are highly unlikely to kill the mites. Additionally, if he has Scabies, this will infest humans for a temporary time period. Additionally, ringworm can also look like this (which humans can also get). The veterinarian needs to do a skin scrape which will detect if mites are present. Treatment will be based upon results of diagnostics. He will likely get a special shampoo and antibiotics as well as medications to treat to primary cause. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
