My dog is thirsty, losing weight, and has a new bump. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

Why does my dog seem to be very thirsty recently? Also he seems to be losing weight even though hes been eating his usual food. I'm wondering if this has to do with his skin allergy, he has lost most of the hair under the neck and belly area and his skin has turned black from it. One last thing, he has a red bump on his leg. I don't know how long it has been there and id say its almost the size of a cheerio. My dog is a West Highland terrier that is almost 3 years old.

It could be Chase has a medical illness such as diabetes causing him to drink more but lose weight. This red bump could be a benign growth or malignant. I'd take him into a vet today or tomorrow to get these things checked out. If he does have diabetes, he can be treated with insulin. Best of luck.
