My dog is limping with skin off her paw. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 50 lbs

I noticed my dog began limping last night/earlier today on her right back paw. It looks as if some skin came off? Should I take her to the vet or could i just wrap it up?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not uncommon in young, active dogs, especially if they play hard on road or concrete. It is likely to heal on its own and I do NOT recommend placing a bandage yourself. An improperly done bandage can set Mocha up for infection, cut off circulation, and other complications. If she is painful enough to not put weight on her paw at all, see your vet for a professional bandage. If the limping is mild, just rest her (no running/jumping, etc) and watch her for 48 hours. If no improvement, it's time to see the vet. Best wishes to you and Mocha!
