My cat ate string and vomited it days later. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

My cat ate a section of stretchy cord from one of his toys on Saturday evening, I know it was around 8 pm because it was unattended for just a brief moment. He behaved and ate as normal on Sunday, also had his usual bowel movement and is urinating normally. At around 5am this morning (Monday) he vomited up the string but there was no other food. Is it normal for that to have stuck around in his stomach for so long and for him to have digested food eaten after the string?

Yes, this would not be uncommon but I would continue to monitor for any additional vomiting and for normal bowel motions for the next few days as a precaution in case not all was vomited up. Objects can stay in the stomach for months and do not always cause clinical signs (these are mostly related to actual obstruction of the GI tract so many small objects do not cause significant pain or vomiting if food can move around them)
