Spayed cat's incision open and bleeding. Can it heal without stitches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old

My cat was spayed last Tuesday, her incision got a bit infected so we went to see a vet on Saturday who gave her antibiotics. Today it's Monday and we went to the vet for another shot of antibiotics but a different vet removed her stitches (after six days). The wound seems open and inflamed and is bleeding a bit. I'm concerned about my cat getting a worse infection and about the healing process. Is it possible for this open wound to heal without stitches and possible complications?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gita. Six days is quite early to have her sutures removed. However, maybe it was suspected that she was having a reaction to the suture material or that they were contributing to the infection. It is possible for her wound to heal, but it will be more difficult without the sutures. She must be kept from licking the surgical site and her movements need to limited. No running, jumping or playing. I hope this information helps!
