My cat won't take Amitriptyline pills. Can I get a flavored liquid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

Is there another way to give my cat Amitriptyline? Had a lot of trouble trying to drop the pill in his throat as instructed. I put it in wet food, pill pockets, other treats but nothing. Tried a topical cream but that was too expensive to get refilled every 21 days. Can it be given in a liquid that can be flavored differently? This medication works well when I am able to get it in his system. Used to stop urination in the house caused by anxiety.

Hi there. Yes, you should be able to get it compounded into a flavored liquid (like chicken or fish) if this would be easier for you to give. You may have a local compounding pharmacy that can do this, or you can use an online pharmacy like Wedgewood or Vets First Choice. I would recommend calling your veterinarian tomorrow to talk about this - he/she should be able to tell you where you can have this done, and can write a new prescription for the compounded medication.
