Why does my puppy suddenly have bloody, mucus stool if he has worms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

My puppy is about 3 months old, he has worms but we haven’t been able to deworm him yet. Do you think these intestinal worms would cause my puppy to have a bloody and mucus covered stool? He just started having them.

Yes, intestinal parasites could certainly cause a puppy to have bloody stool with mucus. I would recommend deworming him right away if you have seen worms. You can either use an over-the-counter broad spectrum dewormer like Panacur or Strongid, or get a prescription dewormer from your veterinarian.

Poor Frank! Bloody stool with mucus is definitely not normal. Intestinal parasites are the most common cause of this problem in puppies - this can be the problem even if he was dewormed recently, because there are some parasites (such as coccidia) that are not killed by regular dewormers. He may also have an intestinal infection of some kind. I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your veterinarian's office to be checked - they can examine it under the microscope to help determine the problem, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat it depending on what is found. In the meantime, I would also suggest feeding Frank a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice to help settle his stomach - this won't treat the underlying problem causing the blood and mucus, but may help to improve his stool temporarily until you are able to see the vet.
