My cat is in pain, growling, and not eating. Should I put her down?

Hi. I have a 7 year old female cat called Pinga who has been sitting in the same place for days, barely eating and growling at us. We took her to see the vets and they found nothing wrong with her blood test but she yellped when they felt down her spine. We have been given some antibiotics to give her but I was wondering about advice and the unfortunate likelihood of sadly putting her down. How likely would that be? Thanks,

Poor Pinga! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. Without knowing what's wrong, I'm afraid it's hard to say whether she will need to be put down or not - but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet, since it sounds like the only treatment that has been tried is an antibiotic. I'm wondering if there's a reason she wasn't given any kind of pain medication or anti-inflammatory, given that she obviously seems painful? If she isn't improving, I would definitely recommend taking her back to your veterinarian for a recheck, or getting a second opinion from another vet in your area. It sounds like x-rays would be a logical next step to get a better look at her spine, and she might also benefit from a steroid and/or other type of pain medication such as buprenorphine or gabapentin, even if no definitive diagnosis can be made. You can discuss these options with your veterinarian when you take her back in to be seen.
