Dog ringworm: She licks cream. Is it safe? How to protect kids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 50 lbs

My dog has ringworm on front limb, at least I'm almost certain it is. I have ketoconazole cream 2%. She is a licker and she will lick the cream off. What should I do? If she ingest some of the cream will it hurt her? What's best way to handle this situation? Should I try tea tree oil or something else. She's very affectionate and loves to give kisses but I have 3 small kids around also.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pupsters. I recommend seeing a veterinarian and having a fungal culture performed to determine if ringworm is present or not. A lot of skin diseases can have similar appearances. Ringworm can be spread to people so having children in the home, you will want to know for sure. It may be a bacterial infection in which case the cream would not work. In the meantime, place an E-collar on her so that she does not lick the lesion. I hope this information helps!
