My senior dog is afraid of going outside. Should I still take him out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My almost 16 year old pincher-chihuahua mixed breed dog does not want to go outside for about 2 years now. But since I want to keep him a bit of active, I still take him out for 5-10 minutes. He never wants to stay outside and attempts to run home each time he can. I catch him up and carry into the grass back. His hearing and eye sight is worsened but he still can hear if I clap. Although he hardly gets where the sound is coming from the first time. Should I continue to take him out?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Spike. Dogs do benefit from the mental stimulation of being outside. So it is good to continue allowing him outdoor access. However, maybe holding him in your arms would be better. It seems like he is nervous about being in the grass. I hope this information helps!
