My dog ate a towel and isn't pooping. Is it a bowel obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 45 lbs

My dog ate several small bites out of a towel during the night Thursday. Friday he did not have a bm. Yesterday he had a small bm. He usually has a bm with every long walk, 3 times a day. My husband is worried that the dog has a bowel obstruction. What advice do you have for us?

Hello. I would try feeding him a laxative & one way to do this is to take 1-2 pieces of bread & slather with Vaseline. You can repeat this in 6-8 hours & hopefully this will push the rest of the towel material through. If your dog vomits, do not feed any more & you may need to see your vet. But several small bites of cloth in a 45 pound dog should not cause a significant blockage. Give this a try & see if he becomes more regular. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
