My dog's gums are pink. Is that normal? Why is her head hair thinning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

I have no paid much attention to my dogs gums before but looked today and I am not sure if this color is normal for her gums. She is also balding on her head and I am not sure if this is due to her age or not.

This looks like a normal color for gums. They should be pink. The thinned hair may just be him aging but if it is itching or if there are any scabs or getting worse, I would have your vet take a look to ensure it doesn’t need any treatment. I hope this helps!

Pale pink mucous membranes/gums are perfectly normal. When they turn white or bluish then there is an emergency and your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. You do not have to be worried.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Be sure not to pull hard on the lip when you check the gums. Make sure it is in good lighting. If Benji is acting fine then watch him. If you are still concern have your Vet check him out Monday. There is nothing to do at home. If he is acting sick he should be seen today. My hope is that if he is otherwise acting normal the color of his gums is normal for him. I wish you the best!
